Being a Green Circle Salon

Getting a gorgeous new haircut is great, but that’s not the end of the story. Our Mount Pleasant hair salon is proud to be a Green Circle Salons Vancouver member. We thought we’d fill you in on what that means for you, and for our hair salon.

Green Circle Salons is a sustainable waste solutions program that helps salons like ours recycle and reuse 85 - 95% of our waste. Green Circle Salons was created in 2009 when founder, Shane Price, was getting a haircut and asked the stylist where all the waste goes. When the stylist replied, “In the garbage,” Shane wondered what better options may be possible for the beauty industry to eliminate their waste. This led to the founding of Green Circles Salons. Salons, including Stone Fox Hair, can voluntarily enroll in the program in an effort to reduce waste. We love the program because it’s a hassle-free and easy way for us to be more gentle on the environment.

With guidance from the program, our salon separates hair, metal, plastics, paper, and chemicals into bins. By separating these materials, city staff can properly dispose of everything in a safe way. For example, the chemicals and dyes we use in salons can be harsh on the environment. That’s one of the waste products that the Green Circle Salons program tackles to help reduce environmental damage.

One of the coolest things about the program is its approach to re-using the hair that normally ends up on our salon floor, and then in the garbage. Instead, hair trimmings from our salon and hundreds of others get massed together into something called a “hair boom”.

Hair Booms

Hair boom: It sounds like an explosion, but it’s actually the opposite.

Hair booms are used to absorb oil spills, and they do an awesome job of it. Just one pound of hair can absorb one quart of oil in under a minute. Who would have thought? After absorbing the oil, the hair can be ringed out and reused up to 100 times.

Hair booms from Green Circle Salons have been used in massive oil spills including the 2010 BP oil spill, helping to save wildlife on the beach from coming into contact with the toxic mess.
