4 Tips for a Healthy Scalp

When you sexy foxes come visit us at our hair salon in Mount Pleasant, you’re always asking about ways to keep your hair healthy, shiny, and thick. Well, ask and you shall receive!

Let’s take it back to the basics. When it comes to your hair, this means your scalp!

Great hair starts with a healthy scalp. When your scalp isn’t healthy, it can lead to burning, irritation, itching, dandruff, hair loss, and excess oil. We don’t want you to have to deal with any of these issues! So how do you avoid them?

1.AVOID SUN EXPOSURE

Your scalp has the same skin as your face, and, like your face, your scalp needs protection from the sun. So if you’re heading out in the sun, especially in the summer, make a plan to cover up. Don’t want to wear a wrap or hat? No problem! You can use KEVIN.MURPHY’s UN.TANGLED, SESSION.SPRAY and MOTION.LOTION that contain UV-blocking ingredients such as sunflower and safflower seed extract. Check out the Den Modern Apothecary for more products to protect you from the sun.

2. GIVE YOUR SCALP A HAND

One of the best things for your scalp is a massage, like the ones we do at Stone Fox Salon. Why are massages so good? First off, they’re majorly relaxing! That relaxation can bring you a sense of peacefulness and prevent dandruff and hair loss. Who wouldn’t want that? Scalp massages also increase blood flow in the head and stimulate lymphatic drainage which can lead to increased hair growth. For the best results, we suggest massaging your scalp once a week for two to five minutes. Using your fingertips, firmly rub in small circles. Make sure you move across your scalp, massaging every part of it. If you can’t or don’t want to do scalp massages by hand, you could also pick up a scalp massage brush or a Hui Hui Enchantress Guasha Combs at the Den Modern Apothecary.

3. TAKE PRECAUTIONS WHEN COLOURING

Colouring your hair can be fun and the perfect way to express your style. But the colouring process can be hard on your scalp if it’s not done the right way. If you are colouring your hair at home (which we do NOT recommend!), make sure to follow all the instructions, especially the amount of time to leave the colour on for. Keep in mind the box dyes make a lot of promises that aren’t always fulfilled. Your best bet is to have all your colour professionally done. Salons and their stylists have more options for less toxic, more gentle, and more advanced colouring technologies. Bleaching your hair? That can be even more damaging to your scalp, so it should only be done by a professional.

4. CATCH ISSUES EARLY

Watch out for any signs that something is off with your scalp. These signs can be anything from itching, to burning, to dandruff. The faster you notice these signs, the sooner you can find out what’s going on with your scalp and resolve any issues. If you have continued issues that you just can’t shake, check in with your family doctor to make sure that nothing is seriously amiss.
