In the past, our hair salon in Mount Pleasant has used gendered pricing. You know what we’re talking about… Like most salons, we charged different prices for men’s cuts and women’s cuts. But no more!

Why our hair salon in Mount Pleasant is moving to gender-free pricing

1. Inclusivity

Gendered pricing pushes clients to declare their gender to us – and to fit into the false male/female dichotomy. It’s no wonder salon visits can create anxiety for and exclude members of the LGBTQ2S community, especially non-binary folks. At Stone Fox Hair, we acknowledge that there are many genders and don’t want you to ever feel that you have to disclose your gender-identity to us.

Speaking more broadly, we are committed to our hair salon in Mount Pleasant not just being an inclusive space, but a safe, welcoming one – for everybody. Creating gender-free pricing helps us do that.

If you are a member of a marginalized community and feel there’s something more we could do to help you feel welcomed and safe in our salon, please always feel free to drop us a line. We’re here and we’re listening.

2. Removing gendered language

Gendered language supports the idea that there are “men’s styles” and “women’s styles”. For example, in the past, if a woman had, say, a simple buzzcut, she’d either be overcharged or would have to be charged as a man. That reinforces gender stereotypes and constructs. Well… we’re done with that crap! #Hairhasnogender, so neither should hairstyling prices.

3. Fairness

Gendered pricing ends up being unfair. Guys underpay for complex styles, which leaves our stylists not being properly paid and acknowledged for their hard work. Women with simple styles end up being overcharged, which isn’t fair to them. Non-binary folks may not even know what pricing to expect.

Our new, gender-free pricing means you pay based on the amount of time and effort your hairstyle takes. It’s as simple as that!

How the new gender-free pricing will work at our hair salon in Mount Pleasant

So… how does this new system work? Appointments will now be broken down into 15-minute increments. You will then pay your stylist’s hourly rate to the nearest 15 minutes.

For example, if you’re seeing Monique for a haircut, her hourly rate is $72. That means you pay ¼ of that price for each 15 minutes. So the price would be:

  • $18 for 15 minutes
  • $36 for 30 minutes
  • $54 for 45 minutes
  • $72 for 60 minutes
  • $90 for 75 minutes
  • $108 for 90 minutes

If you’re not a math person and you’re wondering how much your appointment will be, get in touch with us and we’re happy to do the calculations for you!

Don’t worry if you don’t know how long your appointments take! In January, we’ll be going through our files to determine how long your hairstyle usually needs and will book you in accordingly.

If you have any questions about our gender-free pricing or want to check it out for yourself, give us a ring at our hair salon in Mount Pleasant!
